RES COUNCIL MINUTES

March 8, 2023

In attendance:
Jerry Salmon, Julie Vereschagin, Natalie Ball,

Hydee Edwards, Jasmine Olsen, Jessica Saigeon,

Diane Nelson, Cheri Gilbert

 

- Principal’s Business

     - Trickster Theatre April 17-21st Theme of Resilience
     - Thursday, April 20th 2 performances 6:30/7:30 for parents grades 4-6
     - Trickster Handbook with everything laid out
     - Note to parents explaining how everything will work and run
     - Quite a bit of volunteers from parents. Need 4 volunteers per day
     - Approximately 40 totes of costumes and props, preparing props, etc.
     - Sign up genius link for parent volunteers that is very specific and labeled for helper. 
     - Poster at Parent Engagement table to get the information out

- Parent Engagement Night  - March 9th Same night as parent/teacher conference 4-7pm

     - Classes offered from 5-7pm four sessions/25 minutes each session

                   - Supporting Kids with Anxiety/Mental Health Struggles

                   - Supporting Reading at Home

                   - Supports Available Through Jordan’s Principle

                   - How to Talk to Your Kids About Sex/Internet Safety

                   - Literacy through African Drumming

  -Door prizes (Natalie), Treats – Those on parent council are asked to bring squares/cookies for welcome table at front door with veggies & fruit, treats (Cheri-box for door prizes, paper, pens etc.)

  - Thanks to the Lions Club for generous donations & Chocolate Bar fundraiser for Trickster Theatre

  1. Mandating Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Checks for School Board Trustee Candidates Vote: 7 for – 0 against
  2. Supporting Integrated Education Funding Vote: 7 for – 0 against
  3. Integrate Climate & Biodiversity Education Throughout the K-12 Curriculum Vote: 0 for – 7 against
  4. Add Rights of Victims of Bullying and Violence to Education Act abstained from voting
  5. Required Consultation Opportunities for Proposed Changes to Legislation, Regulations, or Established Programs or Practices Vote: 7 for – 0 against (with amendment to add that we request that the minister of education disbands the parents advisory council and utilizes the ASCA and school councils as their advisory board.)
  6. Setting and Meeting a Student to School Counsellor Ratio to improve Mental Health Vote:  7 for – 0 against

Section 2

  1. Maintain Advocacy Policy 13-3
  2. Amend Advocacy Policy 21- 02
  3. Amend existing Bylaws of the ASCA

 

- Book Fair Volunteers

            - March 20-24th Jessica will get email out for volunteers

- Upcoming Events or Other Business

            - Spring Dance & Cake Walk— May 29th Dance outside in fenced area & cakes inside the gym 6:30-8pm

            - ASCA Conference – April 21-23 Hydee & Cheri for RES & Natalie going for District

            -Next Council Meeting is April 5, 2023 (changed because of Easter holiday break)
